Getting to Rwanda

The international airport at Kigali in Rwanda links the country with many international destinations, offering direct flights to Brussels, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Doha, Mombasa, Johannesburg, and Addis Abada amongst others.

Once in Rwanda a good road network connects Kigali with the forests and mountains of Rwanda. That said, self-driving around the country can be daunting and is best navigated with a guide.

Passport, visa, and other entry requirements to Rwanda

No matter your nationality, you will need to get a visa on arrival in Rwanda which allows you to stay in the country for a maximum of 30 days. Your passport will also need to be valid for at least six months with at least two blank pages.  If you are planning on visiting Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya then you can get an East African Tourist Visa which allows for seamless travel between all three countries.

Most countries also require a yellow fever certificate to be provided on your return from Rwanda. It is also compulsory to have a yellow fever certificate in order to see the gorillas in Rwanda. Vaccinations for diphtheria, hepatitis A, polio, tetanus
and typhoid are also strongly recommended.

The best time to visit Rwanda

While Rwanda has an equatorial climate, it is somewhat tempered by the altitude of the country. Rainfall is most significant between the months of September to December and March to May. The best time to visit the country of Rwanda is in the shorter dry seasons between December and February and June to September. Although with gorilla trekking permits often booked up months in advance, the best time to go is whenever there is availability!
