15 Day Namibia Desert Safari

15 Day Namibia Desert Safari

This guided tour concentrates on the deserts of Namibia and the changing landscapes and geology throughout the country. This is a tour for those looking for otherworldly scenery rather than a wildlife safari. Your guide will share his knowledge of the history of Namibia and how the land has come to look as it does today.

One of the highlights of the tour is the second-largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon in the southern regions of Namibia. You will also visit both the Kalahari and Namib deserts, along with the abandoned town of Kolmanskop, the beautiful Spitzkoppe mountain, and the rugged Damaraland.

This tour includes all transport and fuel, select meals, accommodation, an English speaking guide, and park entrance fees.

The surrounding desert is also home to the wild horses of Aus. Your guide will take you to the best place to view them, at a small waterhole. Seeing these animals in their harsh environment and hearing how they came to be there so many years ago will certainly make you appreciate their resistance to such harsh conditions.

Day 6: Kolmanskop will be your first stop this morning. Almost at the coast, you will first notice the desert that becomes sand dunes. Kolmanskop is known as the ghost town as it once was a thriving luxurious town created by the fortunes of diamond discoverers, it was abandoned and taken over by the sand. Day 8: Make the most of a lie-in this morning, unless you wish to head back into the Namib Naukluft park for a few more photos of the dunes. Today you only have a short distance to travel which will be appreciated after the long roads of the first week. Lunch will be at the little village of Solitaire in the middle of the Namib Desert. Make sure you have a bite of their famous Apple Pie! Just a bit further on you will reach your lodge for the night. Rostock Ritz is perfectly situated with views over spectacular mountains. A drink at the restaurant this evening will be accompanied by the changing colours of the mountains as the sun sets.

Your guide will explain how this unusual rock formation came to be.

Day 13: Prepare to stretch your legs as this next region is excellent for hiking. The Waterberg plateau has many hiking trails in the national park, some at the foot of the plateau and some going all the way up to the top. So there is something for everyone. Discuss with your guide which will be best for you. You will likely see many small creatures as the plateau is made of porous soft rock which creates many natural springs, and thus green vegetation unlike that you will have seen anywhere else in Namibia.
