6 Day Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Rwanda

Spend 6 days on a gorilla and chimpanzee trekking tour in magnificent Rwanda. Visit the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, enjoy scenic drives through the Land of a Thousand Hills, come face to face with mountain gorillas, and discover the vast untouched tropical rainforest of Nyungwe Forest with its 310 different bird species, hundreds of butterflies and orchids, and over 75 different species of mammals – including 13 primates.

The package includes return economy airfare with RwandAir from Johannesburg to Kigali Airport where you will be met by your guide. Here you will enjoy city tour that begins as a historical journey through the city from the first modern building on which the capital city was first founded to the rapidly growing neighbourhoods that are changing the face of the city. Visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a must for all visitors to Rwanda. The memorial commemorates the bravery, strength, and unmatched struggle of the people of Rwanda.

Travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, enjoying the scenery along the way. Almost the entire country is 5-7 thousand feet high and incredibly lush. You have the afternoon at leisure to enjoy your surroundings. The next day you will enjoy a mountain gorilla trekking experience. Set off into the tropical rainforest covering the hills surrounding Virunga Volcanoes. You can stay close to the gorillas for a maximum of one hour, allowing for observation and photography. In the afternoon, tour to the nearby ex-poacher’s village. As part of overall conservation endeavours, former poachers renounced their old ways and became conservation activists. Visitors can learn about traditional skills such as fire-making, archery, traditional medicine, and cultural dances, among other attractions.

Next, you will drive along the lakeshore of Lake Kivu via Kibuye town. This drive is absolutely stunning - winding roads hug the lakeshore and hills making for some fantastic photo opportunities. While at the hotel you can participate in a coffee roasting and tasting experience. The next morning will include a chimpanzee
trekking experience. The Rwandan chimp population is about 500 individuals and thought to be confined to Nyungwe National Park. An extensive network of well-maintained walking trails leads through Nyungwe forest to various waterfalls and viewing points. Nyungwe is renowned for its 13 species of primates and in particular, is a great location for chimpanzee tracking and viewing 9 different species of monkey including the Ruwenzori Colobus and the handsome L’Hoests monkey.

Finally, you will drive back to Kigali across a beautiful landscape of rolling verdant terraced hills. En-route stop at Butare where you will enjoy lunch and visit the Kings Palace Museum at Nyanza to see how traditional monarchs lived in pre-colonial times.
