Travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, enjoying the scenery along the way. Almost the entire country is 5-7 thousand feet high and incredibly lush. Set off into the tropical rainforest covering the hills surrounding Virunga Volcanoes. You can stay close to the gorillas for a maximum of one hour, allowing for observation and photography. In the afternoon, tour to the nearby ex-poacher’s village. As part of overall conservation endeavours, former poachers renounced their old ways and became conservation activists. Visitors can learn about traditional skills such as fire-making, archery, traditional medicine, and cultural dances, among other attractions.
Next, you will drive along the lakeshore of Lake Kivu via Kibuye town. This drive is absolutely stunning - winding roads hug the lakeshore and hills making for some fantastic photo opportunities. While at the hotel you can participate in a coffee roasting and tasting experience. The next morning will include a chimpanzee
trekking experience. The Rwandan chimp population is about 500 individuals and thought to be confined to Nyungwe National Park. An extensive network of well-maintained walking trails leads through Nyungwe forest to various waterfalls and viewing points. Nyungwe is renowned for its 13 species of primates and in particular, is a great location for chimpanzee tracking and viewing 9 different species of monkey including the Ruwenzori Colobus and the handsome L’Hoests monkey.
Finally, you will drive back to Kigali across a beautiful landscape of rolling verdant terraced hills. En-route stop at Butare where you will enjoy lunch and visit the Kings Palace Museum at Nyanza to see how traditional monarchs lived in pre-colonial times.
