For this week's blog, I decided to put together photographs of the second oldest European settlement in South Africa, Stellenbosch. This town is situated just 45 minutes out of Cape Town and is the one of the major hearts of South Africa's Winelands. It's a fantastic place to visit in the warmer months, however, winter can also be quite beautiful, though cooler. The town itself is filled with amazing Cape Dutch architecture.
There are numerous churches of varying demominations; some of which date back to the 1800s.
Artwork is everywhere in Stellenbosch. From paintings to sculptures and other quaint artworks in the form of, for instance, bicycle racks. There are art galleries everywhere too so take a break from the beautiful architecture and check out some intriguing South African art.
The streets are great for a walking tour, as is the very town itself. Stellenbosch university is embedded in the town so you can walk between the old university buildings that are equally beautiful and historical.
Stopping by any coffee shop or café is a treat in Stellenbosch. My personal favourites are Meraki, De Warenmakt and Bird Cage. But really, you can't go wrong with any coffee place in this town. Don't get me started with the restaurants. That's a whole other blog post! My very, very favourite is Genki; a Japanese-style sushi and tapas spot with amazing Plum Sake.
It really is worth it to take a walk through central Stellenbosch. If you are on one of our tours or activities ad have the time to spare, I encourage you to walk around and take loads of pictures!
And of course, stop off for a sneaky ice cream in the warmer months!
