Volcanoes Virunga Lodge (Full Board i.e. Lunch – Khana Kazana Restaurant, Dinner, Bed and Breakfast, a selection of drinks)
Early breakfast at the hotel before heading to the park headquarters for Gorilla Trek briefing. We will then transfer you to the start point of your guided walk that begins at 08h00. Here, your amazing adventure begins.
Highlight: Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is home to the rare and endangered mountain gorilla and the rich mosaic of ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath, but the high point will be spending an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and appearance as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and raising their young.
After this memorable experience, you will return to the lodge for lunch and some much-needed rest. (Optional: boat ride on Lake Ruhondo or do the Dianne Fossey Tomb hike). Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Volcanoes Virunga Lodge (Full Board – Lunch, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast, a selection of drinks)
After breakfast, you'll be transferred to the park headquarters for briefing before you start your guided Golden Monkey Trek which is another highlight of Volcanoes National Park.
Highlight: The Golden Monkey is a local subspecies of the widespread Sykes Monkey, also known as the “Blue Monkey” and is endemic to the high altitude forests. The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor.
OPTION 2: MUSANZE CAVES: US$ 48 per person
This morning, you will be transferred to Musanze Caves for briefing before you start your guided tour at 15h00.
Highlight: Formed by centuries of geologic activity centered around the Virunga volcanoes next door, the 1.25-mile long Musanze caves are located just outside of the town they share a name with, and are only a 90-minute drive from Kigali. With an enormous opening (and an equally huge number of bats resident inside), the greenery outside spilling over into the twilight within makes for a fantastic photo op. Though today they’re a tourist attraction, the caves were used as a shelter during wartime for many centuries leading right up into the modern era, and as such, it’s an important site to local people. Thus, out of respect for the area’s residents, access is limited to guided visits. Expert guides lead every tour, and they can explain the history of the caves from their formation to present day. The tours make an excellent add-on activity for the afternoon after you’ve seen the gorillas, take about 2.5 hours, and can be done at any time throughout the year.
OPTION 3: VISIT THE DIAN FOSSEY TOMB: US$ 60 per person
You will have an early breakfast at the lodge, followed by transfer to the park headquarters for briefing. You will then start your guided Dian Fossey Tomb Hike.
Highlight: This is one of the most sought after safari activities carried out while visiting Volcanoes national park. The trek involves a 30 minutes’
drive from the park headquarters to the trail head to access the Karisoke research camp where visitors walk for 10 minutes to the park boundary. The walk from the park boundary to the research center where the Dian’s grave is, takes about an hour to 1 hour and a half hours and affords good views of forest hogs, forest elephants, a variety of primates and bird species. This hike is an incredible experience physically, emotionally and intellectually. It is so inspiring to learn about someone who was so dedicated and left a legacy that exists even today. She was buried next to her favorite Gorilla, Digit and several others.
OPTION 4: CYCLING TO THE TWIN LAKES: US$ 40 per person
Your tour starts in the morning from Red Rocks Point and you'll cycle to Twin Lakes and back. This tour takes 4 hours.
Highlight: Situated between Musanze and the Ugandan border are 2 scenic lakes - Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo - usually referred to as the twin lakes. The Twin Lakes are exceptionally beautiful with farmed hills surrounding the water, offering outstanding views over the Virunda Volcanoes. In the afternoon, you will visit the Ibyi Iwacu village for a Rwandese cultural experience. Ibyi Iwacu is changing the traditional perception of what constitutes tourism through sharing various aspects of rural cultures and livelihoods into tourist attractions and creating income-generating activities for rural people Proceed back to the capital city, Kigali. Check in, dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.
