To find a place that changes your life or just allows you to switch off under a beautiful South African sky is what you want, but just where do you go? Here are some ideas from a South African road a little less traveled than others…
Many locals in Cape Town know Langebaan very well and with it being less than 2-hours drive from the heart of the Mother City, it really is a great escape. Yes, there is Club Mykonos and all its trimmings, but the Langebaan Lagoon has a certain tranquility that even the local may not have truly explored. The soft sandy beaches and warmer water make Langebaan lagoon a family treasure and a tourist’s secret piece of quiet. You may decide to kayak on the water or try one of a handful of other water sports or you may just choose to lay down a towel and soak up the sun from the windless shore. There are Bed and Breakfast guesthouses and options for self-catering accommodation so come for the day or stay for a few days, the choice is yours. Enter the Langebaan Lagoon via the West Coast Nature Reserve. A popular spot to stop and visit the lagoon is called 'Preekstoel', so do watch out for the signs!
If you want peace and tranquility with as few distractions as possible the Tankwa National Park on the Western and Northern Cape Border is where you want to be. If you want to watch the stars at night this is one of the most unpolluted places on earth with the Sutherland Observatory not too far away. There are places to stay or you can camp out and make the most of the semi-desert environment and soak up barren yet strangely beautiful surroundings.
Easily one of the most under-marketed and lesser known places of absolute natural beauty, the Drakensberg Amphitheatre will quite simply blow your mind. Visited by very few tourists, this spectacular natural phenomenon feels like something right out of a science fiction book. Majestic mountains provide the backdrop of this outstanding place. Step back in awe at the bottom and then take a climb to the top of the Tugela falls and if you thought your mind was blown below it will be even more so from above. This is a place very few people visit, and those who do will never forget.

Very good site and blog. You can add Ai- Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park also as a lesser visited place.
Thank you.
With kind regards.
