Cape Town Boasts 10 Blue Flag Status Beaches

Blue Flag Status is an environmental award for passing a number of stringent tests and processes and Cape Town is proud to boast 10 Blue Flag Beaches for local and international tourists alike.

Incorporated in 1987, Blue Flag Status is one of the most well-known environmental awards in the world, indicating a high level of water quality, public facilities, cleanliness and safety.

With summer around the corner, here’s a list of the top 10 beaches in Cape Town. Bring out the umbrella, slap on some sunscreen and go for a dip at one of these top Blue Flag beaches.

Bikini Beach, Gordon’s Bay

First on the list is Bikini Beach, located along the whale coast. Bikini Beach is a favourite spot for those with children as there are minimal to no waves. The private beach boasts neat facilities and the most idyllic views. The small rocks can be quite uncomfortable when swimming though, so be sure to take some water shoes with you!

Strandfontein Beach

Strandfontein Beach is located along the False Bay coastline which means warmer waters and lovely long walks down the beach. It's famous for having one of the largest tidal pools.

Mnandi Beach, Strandfontein

Mnandi Beach is fantastic for walking and fishing, and it offers spectacular views over the Wolfgat Nature Reserve’s limestone cliffs. There is ample parking that is well positioned so you don’t even have to get out of your car to enjoy views of the sea, whales, and seals, especially during the winter months. Facilities include water slides, a large freshwater swimming pool and playground, kiosk, as well as picnic and braai areas.

Silverstroomstrand

A beautiful clean beaches with a tidal pool and plenty of space to enjoy. Take note that there are a lot of stairs from the pavilion to the beach and entry is closed to day visitors at 6pm.

Melkbosstrand

Not only does Cape Town boast the most number of Blue Flag beaches in the country, but the Western Cape is also the top performing province with 37 beaches awarded full and pilot Blue Flag Status.

KwaZulu-Natal has nine full Blue Flag beaches and seven pilot beaches followed by the Eastern Cape with seven beaches enjoying full Blue Flag status.
